This article surveys empirical research that reveals the variety and diversity of the forms and purposes of causal reasoning, and reveals the myths that have driven philosophical analysis, psychological research, and computational approaches. The intent of the essay is to broaden the horizons for the development of intelligent systems that serve explanatory functions. © 2001-2011 IEEE.
