Solid deuterium (sD(2)) is a favourite converter material for the production of ultra-cold neutrons (UCN) in the next generation of UCN sources. In order to investigate sD(2) properties relevant for this purpose, an apparatus for the preparation and characterization of ortho-D-2 crystals has been built. It will be used for measurements of neutron transmission and scattering cross-sections as well as irradiation experiments with simultaneous optical control of the target conditions. The present paper describes the main components of the apparatus, i.e. the cryogenic optical D-2 cell, the gas system, the optical photography system and the Raman spectroscopy system.
