Backpressure control is one of several effective traffic control schemes for ATM-LAN. Comparing an input queuing switch with an output queuing switch, backpressure control in a congested input queuing switch has the ability to selectively control the output port of the front stage of the input queuing switch. This paper compares an input queuing switch with an output queuing switch for single and multiple stage configurations by using a computer simulation. The output queuing switch controls all the output ports of the front switch. The input queuing switch, however, can selectively control the congested output port of the front switch. This paper evaluates and compares the performance of the switches for burst traffic. (C) 1998 Scripta Technica.
