We have designed an advanced passive acoustic leak location system for pressure pipeline. In our system, two acoustic sensors forming one group, which are defined as sensor partner, are attached to the pipeline. The distance between sensors in one group is closer than it between sensor partners. The distance between sensors is known after they are attached to the pipeline. And it is more accurately between sensors in one group than sensor partners. Each sensor measures the acoustic signal generated by the flow through a hole in the pipe. The sensors in one group are used to measure the speed of propagation of the acoustic signal in the pipe. Sensor partners determine the location of the leak relative to the reference sensor. A leak-location measurement can take as little as several minutes to complete and have an accuracy of 3% of the sensor partner separation distance.
