Economic challenges in breast imaging - A survivor's guide to success

The relatively low reimbursement rates for breast imaging, compared with other types of radiologic examinations, present a challenge. In response, options to improve the productivity and efficiency of a breast imaging facility are discussed. Breast imaging center operations should be designed to allow the radiologist to interpret examinations in the most expeditious manner. This means that the radiologist should not have to perform any noninterpretive task that can be performed just as well by another staff member. Providing high quality services will not only improve medical care, but will also promote growth of case volume and thus allow greater economies of scale.
