Noncardiogenic pulmonary edema can result from direct and indirect pathologic processes that injure the lung and alveolar epithelium or produce damage through hematogenous delivery of inflammatory mediators. Noncardiogenic pulmonary edema also frequently is called acute respiratory distress syndrome. This article reviews the pathophysiology and common causative agents of noncardiogenic pulmonary edema. Patient presentation, clinical course, and treatment modalities with greatest benefit are discussed. Prognosis is variable and based on multiple factors, including age, underlying disease, associated organ system dysfunction, and ventilatory and intensive care.
