Localisation and characterization by TEM and EELS of manganese species during graft copolymerization of acrylic acid onto sawdust using KMnO4 as initiator

摘要
Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations of sawdust after pretreatment with KMnO4 were carried out. It was found that manganese is principally located on the S3 layers involving graft copolymerization in the lumen rather than in the cell wall. The results obtained by EELS show that MnO2 deposited on wood participates in the grafting mechanism of acrylic acid through formation of radical intermediates during oxidation of wood which initiate free radical chain transfer reaction onto wood.
