This article evaluates the state of research on civic service as presented by the authors of this volume. The article reviews various issues related to the research, including definitions, the purposes of programs, the programs' sponsors, and the forms and goals of civic service programs and recommends steps needed to develop a research agenda potentially leading to a new field of study.
