Protection of groundwater resources quality in industrial areas technical and legislative aspects in the Czech Republic

The main sources of threat to groundwater resources. The area concerned is situated in the fluvial plain of the Odra river. The area is connected with the drinking-water withdrawal area and is in contact with a large potential source of groundwater contamination - an industrial complex of coke plant, chemical plant, refinery, etc. To protect the water withdrawal territory and prevent possible propagation of contamination from the industrial area, an intensive survey was carried out in this place in the past, risk analyses were elaborated, etc. Examples of present state of contamination resulted from 100 years of operation and results of modeled predictions of its development. Example of preventive protection of water withdrawal area - passive protection (protective zones), active protection (hydraulic control of water withdrawal, hydraulic barriers etc.).
