摘要
Computers have made significant inroads in every aspect of medicine and they are increasingly being used in education. Benefits include constant availability, self-paced learning and uniformity of curriculum. They can also be used in remote locations by anyone with internet access. Among the greatest advantages of this technology is the potential to teach critical thinking skills to trainees using problem-based learning (PBL). Once critical thinking skills are mastered, providers can then continually learn throughout their career. Computers can present a vignette and multiple users can asynchronously discuss clinical solutions. Although there are many published approaches regarding online self-learning, very few of these have been critically assessed regarding their effectiveness. This manuscript explores this potential, describes where we are today and how we can attain the ideal teaching format.
