Missing Aspects of Poverty: The Case of Multidimensional Poverty in Iran

This paper applies a sustainability approach to develop a comprehensive framework for measuring Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) using the Alkire-Foster method across geographical and subpopulation groups in Iran. The results reveal that culture, security, and environment, which are often omitted from poverty measures, are crucial components of poverty in Iran. Findings of the study show that the contribution of each dimension to overall poverty varies by location. Analysis of poverty across subpopulation groups reveals a clear pattern in the contribution of each dimension across different population groups. The results provide important evidence to support inclusive and targeted pro-poor policies in Iran.
