Infrared studies of preparation effects in calcium aluminate glasses

The structure of a calcium aluminate eutectic compound (46.5 wt% CaO, 53.5 wt% Al2O3) near the solidus temperature and under the presence of mechanical stress due to processing is investigated using infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopies. Undistorted, tetrahedrally-coordinated aluminum atoms are present in splat-quenched samples, whereas distorted AlO4 tetrahedra appear in samples that are air-cooled or drawn into a fiber. In contrast to distortion of coordination polyhedra that result from processing variations, changes in the oxygen coordination around aluminum atoms from tetrahedral to pentahedral and octahedral coordination occur for calcium aluminate melts above the liquidus point.
