Raw ore of bentonite is abundant in China, but most ore is calcium-base bentonite of poor quality. Therefore the bentonite used as anionic microparticle component in papermaking is import product mostly. For improving the quality, the bentonite ore was modified from calcium-base to sodium-base and the property of CPAM/bentonite retention aid system were investigated in this work. Various modifiers were applied in the preparation and the characteristics of bentonite were compared using X-ray diffraction, and the expansion times and colloid index were measured before and after modification. Results indicated that sodium-base bentonite could be prepared from calcium-base bentonite by modification in this investigation, and the microparticle retention aid system combined CPAM with modified bentonite could improve the first pass retention obviously. Results also showed that the sodium citrate was the best modifier in this research and the modified bentonite was comparable to the import bentonite product.
