Evaluation of Mesocyclops edax as a Biological Control Agent of Aedes aegypti Larvae in Laboratory Conditions

The copepod Mesocyclops edax was evaluated under laboratory conditions as a biological control agent for Aedes aegypti larvae. L1 larvae of Ae. aegypti at different densities were exposed for 24 hours to a M. edax female without food for 24 hours, observing more predation by M. edax as the density of Ae. aegypti larvae increased, reaching 49 larvae consumed in 1 day. Using the Spearman statistical model, it was determined that predation by M. edax depended on the prey density. Mesocyclops edax has potential for use in strategies for integrated vector control of the mosquito that transmits dengue, Chikungunya, and Zika viruses.
