The Cdc7/Dbf4 protein kinase: target of the S phase checkpoint?

Cdc7/Dbf4 is a protein kinase that is required for the initiation of DNA replication in eukaryotes. Recent work has provided new clues to the role that Cdc7/Dbf4 plays in this process. A range of other observations suggest that Cdc7/Dbf4 also plays another, less well characterized, role in checkpoint function and in the maintenance of genomic integrity. In this review we attempt to bring together new information to explain how Cdc7/Dbf4 may perform these two distinct functions. © 2000 European Molecular Biology Organization.
