Aims: A retrospective analysis was performed to investigate the effectiveness of therapy in cancer of the oral cavity and oropharynx. Methods: From 1990 to 1994, 85 patients with tumors of the oral cavity (27), tongue (51) and oropharynx (7), with clinical Stages II (12 cases) and III-IV (73 cases) were treated at Me Research Institute of Oncology and Radiology. All cases were staged according to TNM criteria (UICC 1982): 12 were T2N0M0 and 73 T-3-4N1-2M0. Sixty four patients were male and twenty one - female. The average age was 59 (51-70). Histologically, all cases were squamous eel carcinoma. Results: Ferry five patients with carcinoma of the oral cavity and oropharynx had complex treatment with radiotherapy, surgery and chemotherapy, 31 patients had radical neck lymph node dissection. Twenty patients were treated with radiation alone. Radiotherapy was performed with 60Co and it was given trs conventional fractionation of 2 Gy/day to total of 60 Gy (12) and to total 40 Gp (8). Twenty two patients lived more than 3 years. Conclusion: Combination of surgery and radiotherapy may be the preferred treatment of patients with carcinoma Of the oral cavity and oropharynx.
