Let F denote a field such that char(F) not equal 2. It is shown that every square matrix over F is expressible as a product of two diagonalizable matrices, except when F = GF(3), in which case three diagonalizable matrices are needed in general. Partial results for the case where char(F) = 2 is also presented. Finally, the extent to which the nullities of these factors can be prescribed is also investigated. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Inc.
