Electron microscopy studies of the oxidation of Nd-Fe-B magnets

摘要
The oxidation microstructure and mechanism of a commercial NdFeB magnet have been investigated using x-ray diffraction and electron microscopy. Oxidation leads to decomposition of the Nd2Fe14B matrix phase into a mixture of nanocrystalline alpha-Fe and amorphous Nd-(B)-oxide and transformation of the Nd-rich intergranular phase from f.c.c Nd with a NdOX ordered superlattice into h.c.p-Nd2O3. The high oxygen concentration and the morphology of the decomposition front of the oxidation layer suggest that oxygen transport through the alpha-Fe / Nd-(B)-oxide interfaces is the mechanism controlling the oxidation kinetics.
