Reports concerning solution-mediated polymorphic transformation are reviewed with regard to the mechanism observed in each transformation. A polymorphic transformation is initiated by nucleation of the second phase. It is observed in the reviewed journal articles that nucleation of the second phase in a solution-mediated polymorphic transformation displays a tendency to occur on, or at, the surface of the existing phase. A number of published examples of this are discussed in detail here, with a view to generating a greater understanding of the role of the surface of the existing polymorph in a solution-mediated polymorphic transformation.
