Spore germination characteristics of Azolla filiculoides Lamarck, a recent invader of the Donana Mediterranean wetlands, have been quantified experimentally. Batches of spores were subjected to different storage conditions, salinity concentrations, phosphorus availability and drought effects. Cold pretreatment did not stimulate spore germination, whereas drought, a characteristic different from Azolla's native habitat, reduced it (40 +/- 7 vs 13 +/- 5). Germination declined with the increase of salinity (r = -0.50, notably above 5000 mu S cm(-1)), whereas phosphorus availability had no significant effect. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
