Activities in a new way of teaching machine elements in Germany

摘要
During the last two years a group of about 25 persons teaching machine elements - most of them at German universities - have discussed modified structures and contents. The background of these discussions are developments in engineering practice (the term "machine elements" as well as the attitude towards machine elements changing considerably here), advanced theoretical knowledge (design methodology), the availability of new tools (CAD and others) and recent experiences gained in project-oriented design teaching. The objective of this group of teachers is to carefully "re-engineer" the structures and contents of machine elements courses tin Germany and maybe elsewhere), at the same time maintaining the broad consensus in this area that has been an established and well proven element of engineering education in Germany for many decades. In this paper the background, the objectives and ongoing activities of this movement are presented. The paper also presents an overview over the 16 theses of the so-called Heiligenberg Manifesto containing the basic ideas of future teaching in machine elements from the mentioned group's point of view.
