Low Grade Myofibroblastic Sarcoma of the Larynx - Case Report

Low grade myofibroblastic sarcomas of the larynx are rare tumors, accounting for less than 1% of all laryngeal malignancies. It has a slow-growing infiltrative pattern inside deep soft tissue and due to the fact that it is uncommon and the histopathological aspect is very plastic, the differential diagnosis can be difficult and it requires special techniques, such as imunohistochemistry or electron microscopy. The authors report the case of a 77-year-old woman who was referred to the ENT Clinic with increasing hoarseness for six months. IHC confirmed the diagnosis of low grade myofibroblastic sarcoma and a surgical excision of the tumors was performed. Radiotherapy was not indicated, as the margins of the lesion were malignancy-free. The patient is being regularly followed up and her voice is of good intensity. Although it has metastasizing potential, the prognosis is good comparing to other types of laryngeal malignancies and it is influenced by the size and location of the lesion and the health status of the patient.
