The Sugar campaign 2016/2017 in Slovakia can be regarded as very successful. Favorable weather conditions during the whole period of vegetation were the basis for a good harvest of sugar beet, whose average yield per hectare reached 71.21 tons. Sugar beet was grown on the total area of 21,663 hectares. This acreage was farmed by 195 sugar beet growers. The sugar campaign 2016/17 started in Sered sugar factory (Slovenske cukrovary, s. r. o.) on September 9, 2016 and in Trencianska Tepla factory (Povazsky cukor, a. s.) on September 13, 2016. The campaign started relatively early, due to the expected higher yield of sugar beets. Polarized sugar yield reached the average of 10.89 t per hectare. Both sugar companies together processed 1,442,548 tons of sugar beet. The total production of white sugar in the campaign was 204,794 tons and the average processing capacity reached 10,325 tons per day. The sugar campaign finished in Trencianska Tepla factory on January 21, 2017 and in Sered on February 6, 2017, thus lasting 150 days. In recent years it has been possible to witness a trend of growth in the average yield per hectare of sugar beet, however, sugar content has had a relatively stagnant character.
