摘要
This article explores the philosophy of Emmanuel Levinas in its historical and intellectual context. Levinas' thought aimed at responding to the crisis of modernity characterized by historicism and individualism. In his reflection of modernity, Levinas encountered the biblical revelation which led him to focus on the problem of the other in philosophy. In the first part of the article, the historical and philosophical background of Levinas' thought is discussed. The second and third part analyze how modern European spirit represented by the reason of history and the individualist mind fell into the closure of the sameness so as to ignore the other and even leave it into the oblivion. In the fourth part, way to disrupt the closure of the sameness in the traditional philosophy, and to transcend the dilemma of modern nihilism.
