摘要
Introduction: Diabetes (Diabetes mellitus) is a group of metabolic disease characterized by the increase of blood sugar levels (BSL). Controlling the BSL in diabetes is essential due to its complications that might occurred. The controllable blood sugar can be examined using HbA1c as the parameter. Beside HbA1c, lipid profile is a long-term indicator that determines the risk of cardiovascular complications. Method: The objective was to analyze the correlation between HbA1c level and total cholesterol level on patients with uncontrolled diabetes type 2 on Binjai, Sumatera Utara Province. The research design was analytic descriptive using a cross sectional approach. Consecutive sampling was used to determine 81 patients who met the criteria of having uncontrolled diabetes who came from eight health centers in Binjai. Data were analyzed using Pearson correlation Tests. Result: The result showed that the average levels of HbA1c in diabetic patients was 9.597 mg/dl and the average level of (t)otal cholesterol was 218.903 mg/dl. The Pearson correlation test showed that the increase of the level of HbA1c significantly correlated with the total cholesterol level on the patients with uncontrolled diabetes mellitus type 2 in Binjai (p < 0.5). Conclusion: There was a correlation between HbA1c levels and the total cholesterol serum in patients with uncontrolled Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in Binjai. In order to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease the patients must be able to control their diabetes by dieting, exercising, and taking the prescribed medication regularly.
