Ninth International Congress of Steelmakers

The following were invited to join the Presidium of the Congress: Al. A. Ugarov, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Oskol Electrometallurgical Combine (OEMK); S. Z. Afonin, President of the Association of Steelmakers; E. Kh. Shakhpazov, General Director of the I. P Bardin Central Research Institute of Metallurgy (TsNIIchermet); N. A. Shlyakhov, Chief Engineer at the OEMK. Attendees at the Congress were shown a film about the OEMK before the conference's official beginning. The film proved to be a very interesting introduction to this facility for many of the conferees. A plenary session was held on the first day of the meeting, and the subsequent work was broken up into different sections. Several interesting reports were presented in the sections "Converter Steelmaking," "Electric Steelmaking," "Open-Hearth Steelmaking," "Out-of-Furnace Treatment of Steel," and "Steel Casting." The best of these reports were chosen to highlight the discussions held in the various sections.
