Remarkable advances in mobile technologies and wireless communications allow users to access the Internet anywhere at any time. It becomes increasingly essential to support mobility in IP-based networks. The mobile IP is the most widely known mobility management scheme in IP networks. However, some inherent weaknesses of this protocol are only partially solved. Although the route optimization tries to figure out these problems, it cannot manage mobility binding efficiently. In this article, four binding refreshment schemes, including the always-push scheme, the on-demand scheme, the threshold scheme, and the adaptive push scheme, are proposed and evaluated. Among others, the adaptive push scheme is compared with the well-known mobile IP and route optimization. The simulation results show that the adaptive push scheme proposed in this article outperforms the others and significantly reduces the cost of mobility management in IP-based networks.
