Two new coordination polymers that contain di-copper (Cu-2) units have been prepared using Cu(OAc)(2) H2O in combination with, (1,3,4)oxadiazole organic ligands L-1 and L-2 in MeOH. The compounds were characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction, IR spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. The structure of compound 1 (monoclinic, C2/c, a= 19.9952(14) Angstrom, b = 7.5005(5) Angstrom, c = 16.0442(11) Angstrom; beta = 109.000(10)degrees, V = 2275.1(3) Angstrom(3), Z = 4) features 1-D zigzag chains that are cross-linked into a novel three-dimensional network by weak noncovalvent pi-pi interactions between the 3-pyridyl rings on the L-1 ligand. Compound. 2 (monoclinic, C2/c, a = 27:428(2) A, b = 13.3833(11) Angstrom, c = 8.6339(7) Angstrom, beta = 103.973(2)degrees, V = 3075.5(4) Angstrom(3), Z = 4) also features a zigzag chain motif. In the solid state, small and large hexagonal channels are found in 1 and 2, respectively. Compounds 1 and 2 are new examples of metal dimer-containing coordination polymers.
