Influence of high dietary vitamin E and folic acid supplements on vitamin carry-over and on reproductive performance in sows

High dietary supplements of vitamin E (1 g dl-alpha-tocopheryl acetate) showed no effect on reproductive performence of german landrace sows as compared to controls, which received a concentrate including 35 mg alpha-tocopherol/kg. According to the vitamin E supplements alpha-tocopherol concentration in the sows' serum was elevated during gestation and lactation but the placental transfer of alpha-tocopherol to the fetus was not influenced. However, suckling piglets received a large supply of alpha-tocopherol with colostrum and milk, which could be increased by the vitamin E supplements to the sows concentrate. There was no clear effect of folio acid supplements (10 mg/kg concentrate) on reproductive performance of sows as compared to unsupplemented controls (0,62 mg folic acid/kg concentrate). The carry-over of folic acid to the fetus as well as supply of folic acid to the piglets with colostrum and milk was increased by the folic acid supplements to the sows' concentrate.
