THE DIAPHASIC MARKING OF EUPHEMISTIC VERBAL IDIOMS

We analyse the diaphasic marking of euphemistic verbal idioms in the dictionary of the Spanish Royal Academy and the dictionary by Seco, Andres and Ramos (2017), starting from the data obtained from the Diccionario de locuciones idiomaticas del espaliol actual (Penades Martinez 2019a). The study focuses on verbal idioms referring to the area of death, a field of linguistic interdiction which is not usually correctly treated in dictionaries either as regards the euphemistic label or in relation to other usage labels. The marking of euphemistic idioms presents the following problems: lack of agreement as to whether marking is necessary or possible; partial agreement in the conception of the tenn euphemistic; unsystematic lexicographical treatment of the euphemistic label; disagreement as regards the presentation of the label and its value; and inexistence of theoretical considerations regarding the possibility that a single idiom may present the euphemistic label along with other register labels.
