We prepared four potential linking ligands, [(3-py)-CH=N-(CH3)C6H3-C6H3-(CH3)-NH2, L1], [(4-py)-CH=N-(CH3)C6H3-C6H3(CH3)-NH2, L2], [(3-py)-CH=N-(CH3)C6H3-C6H3(CH3)-N=CH-(3-py), L3], and [(4-py)-CH=N-(CH3)C6H3-C6H3(CH3)-N=CH-(4-py), L4], all of which contain an intervening biphenyl fragment. Whereas ligands L1 and L2 have two types of terminal groups (pyridyl-amine), ligands B and LA have a single type of terminal groups (pyridyi-pyridyl). Ligands L1-L4 reacted with cadmium nitrate to produce ([Cd(L1)(2)(OH2)(2)]center dot(ClO4)(2)center dot(C6H6)}(infinity) (1), {[Cd(L2)(2)(ClO4)(2)]center dot(CH3OH)(2)}(infinity) (2). ([Cd(L3)(2) (OH2)(2)]center dot(ClO4)(2)}(infinity) (3), and [Cd(L4)(2)(CH3OH)(2)(ClO4)(2)] (4), respectively. Whereas compounds 1-3 are 1-dimensional coordination polymers, compound 4 is a discrete molecular species. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
