CD-ROM versus online: Issues and implications for libraries, librarians, and library patrons

CD-ROM has been a mainstay of reference services in libraries for over a decade. In addition, the variety of titles and resources available on CD-ROM has continued to expand. Traditional online services often declined in use as CD-ROM databases took their place in the library. With the growth of the Internet and especially the World Wide Web, online services are again becoming a major force in providing services to library patrons. This paper examines issues and implications of providing CD-ROM and online resources, especially Web-based ones, to library customers. Among discussion items with be goals of the system, needs of users, availability of resources, training, and access to services.
