Methanol poisoning in Estonia in 2001

Sixty-eight people died from methanol poisoning in Estonia in 2001. The typical changes were shown in the brains of those people who had been treated in the hospital for at least two days. Brain damage was characterized by hemorrhagic infarctions of the bilateral basal. ganglia, ischemia and hemorrhagic infarctions in the parietal and occipital lobes, necrosis of the cerebellar tonsils, subcortical. perivascular lacunas in the region of the frontal lobes and basal ganglia. Cerebral infarction was revealed after being hospitalized for more than three weeks. There was small subarachnoidal haemorrhaging, hyperemia of the brain tissue and developing damage of the cross of the optic nerve among those who received no medical treatment. Damage to other organs was caused by the long-term use of ethanol or other diseases.
