Single domain Gd-Ba-Cu-O bulk samples 25 mm in size were melt textured in air, and their superconducting and field-trapping properties were studied. The J(c) and field-trapping properties were improved by employing the Ba-rich GdBa2Cu3Oy composition and the fine Gd2BaCuO5 starting powder. Furthermore, the addition of Ag was effective to enhance the trapped magnetic field, since the perfect symmetric distribution was obtained without a weak link. The maximum value of the trapped field of the Ag-added bulk was 1.2 T at 77 K. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
