Equal channel angular pressing of a SiCw reinforced aluminum-based composite

摘要
Equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) was successfully carried out in an aluminum-based composite reinforced with 15% volume fraction SiC whiskers with an average diameter of similar to 1 mum and an average length of similar to 40 mum. Scanning electron microscopic observation after ECAP reveals the quantitative breaking of the SiC whiskers, but no destruction or failure was observed in matrix metal. The average length of SiC whiskers was decreased from 42 mum in the initial as extruded composite bullet to 4.2 mum with equal channel angular pressing to a true strain of about 2. Brittle fracture of the reinforcement SiC whiskers accounts for its decrease in length. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
