Health-related quality of life in patients after renal transplantation - Can the scale structure of the SF-36 be replicated?

Renal transplantation in patients with chronic renal failure results in improved quality of life. To assess health-related quality of life in these patients, either targeted or generic instruments can be used. The aim of this study was to evaluat the psychometric properties of the SF-36 in a large sample of N = 1.687 patients after renal transplantation. In this sample, the internal consistency ranged between alpha=.64 (scale general health) and alpha=.92 (scale physical functioning), replicating previous results. Discriminant validity was tested by calculating effect sizes (-.03 to -.35). Compared to the norm sample patients after renal transplantation reported a lower quality of life. Inconsistent results were found regarding the bi-dimensionality of the instrument as an indicator of the instrument's construct validity. Regardless of theses inconsistencies the SF-36 proves to be a useful research tool for the assessment of health related quality of life in patients after renal transplantation.
