The demand for surfaces with new (stimulus-triggered) properties is becoming more and more prominent in many industrial branches. Biological species like the lotus leaf or the gecko foot often have remarkable surface structures and extraordinary properties such as self-cleaning, self-healing and anti-(bio) fouling. Mimicking nature has therefore become a central strategy to confer functionality to man-made surfaces. Firstly, challenges and opportunities to produce these surfaces on plastic in industrially relevant ways are discussed. Secondly, artificial aerodynamic, self-cleaning and sticky surfaces are presented, together with the natural surfaces which inspired them.
