Formation of elemental sulfur upon radiolysis of aqueous sulfur dioxide solutions

Yields of formation of elemental sulfur upon radiation-induced decomposition of sulfur dioxide in aqueous solutions were measured depending on the sulfur dioxide concentration, pH, and the amount of sulfuric acid added. The dose dependence of sulfur formation exhibits an induction period and a clearly defined maximum. It was found experimentally that reactions of reducing species and products of SO2 reduction play a significant role in radiolysis of sulfur dioxide.
