Measuring open cluster distances and constraining the surface activity of late-type stars in open clusters

We briefly review our recent technique for estimating the distance to open clusters from measurements of the rotational modulation of fast-rotating late-type cluster members. We then consider the application of this statistical technique to clusters of known distance, and investigate how the observed distribution of Dsini estimates can be used to place statistical limits on the surface distribution of starspots.
