摘要
The economic shock to the leading European countries caused by the above changes was worsened by the disappearance of the two large empires of the Central and South-Eastern Europe as well by the emergence of "new successor states which turned between the two wars from clients into competitors". Under such conditions, the conflict actually continued in the form of economic war (as it is known today) when the expansionism of the states - mostly successors of the big empires - consisted in an aggressive policy of industrialisation and arming, and the new states opposed them by adopting not only political but also economic nationalism, characterized by autarchy aiming at supporting self-determination.
