End-stage renal disease (ESRD), which is often related to diabetes or hypertension, is a serious medical and economic public health problem throughout the world. An understanding of the scope of this condition, as well as the trends in outcomes, is essential for optimizing treatment of ESRD and establishing meaningful strategies for prevention. In this article, Dr Reikes describes the epidemiology of ESRD and reviews the trends in morbidity and mortality for patients undergoing dialysis or renal transplantation.
