The excessive maintenance and inadequate maintenance exist in Chinese in-service aircraft maintenance. In order to amend the situation, this paper provides an analytical method that consists of four main steps. Firstly, coordinate the maintenance tasks to remove repetitive ones and add necessary ones. Secondly, further identify necessary maintenance tasks with regard to their possible failure consequences, in order to remove maintenance tasks for items with non-significant failure consequences. Thirdly, analyze the technical feasibility of maintenance tasks based on failure laws, failure causes and item structural features, to remove technically infeasible tasks. Finally, identify the validity. of preventative maintenance tasks based on their effectiveness and economical effects, so as to ensure the aircraft's safety and availability, and to reduce costs. Through this analysis, the preventative maintenance tasks for in-service aircraft could be effectively optimized and adjusted. Its application to some in-service aircraft has achieved good results.
