The advantages of loss of weight feeders, a specialized dynamic weighing application, are discussed. A loss of weight feeder controls the dispensing of material by weight into a process at a precise rate. The target feed rate is generally known as the loss of weight set point, the measuring units of such set points may vary from grams or second in some pharmaceutical applications. The ability of loss of weight feeders to provide a continuous delivery of material at a predetermined rate, has resulted in their utilization in various production processes, including the supply of raw material into extruders. A loss of weight system is initially calibrated statically and to achieve this, the primary controller display is often switched to display static weight and then a static weighing calibration is carried out in a conventional manner. The modern loss in weight system can be seen to be an amalgam of measurement technique coupled with materials handling expertise gained from knowledge.
