Drying of acidic macroporous styrene-divinylbenzene resins with 12-20% cross-linking degree

The sulfonic macroporous styrene-divinylbenzene resins in acidic form Amberlyst 15, Bayer K-2631, and Lewatit SPC 112 were dried at 298-366 K in a cross-circulation air-dryer. Drying curves showed constant-rate, and falling-rate periods. Drying in the falling-rate period can be explained by a diffusion mechanism. The effective diffusivity of water correlated well with the inverse of absolute temperature in an Arrhenius plot, with an activation energy of 21 +/- 1 kK/mol. Finally, from the moisture content at equilibrium the adsorption enthalpy for water was estimated to be -37 kJ/mol, in good agreement with literature data within the limits of the experimental error.
