Function at all scales: Hierarchical assemblies of nanoparticles provide routes to multifunctional materials, in which structures at different scales impart different functions. Plasmonic vesicles formed by nanoparticle "strings" are useful both as contrast agents for photoacoustic imaging and as light-activated drug-delivery vehicles. © 2016 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
