Infrared Spectroscopy of Li2MnSiO4: A cathode material for Li ion batteries

Different polymorphs of Li2MnSiO4 were synthesized by controlled calcination at 500, 750 and 1000 degrees C. XRD studies suggest formation of Pmnb (gamma) -orthorhombic, Pmn2(1) (beta) - orthorhombic and P2(1)/n (gamma) - monoclinic structures at these temperatures. Infrared studies of these polymorphs suggests differences in the arrangement of SiO4, MnO4 and LiO4 units, and the inequivalent sites of Li+ responsible for better electrochemical performance of Pmn2(1).
