New learning approaches in mathematics: implications for subsequent engineering subjects

摘要
The mathematics that is taught at engineering universities all over the world has been about the same for a long time. With the shift toward greater use of mathematical numerical tools in many subjects, the content and manner of teaching in mathematics are undergoing profound changes. Since mathematics is often taught early in a curriculum, it is of interest to investigate how this will affect other engineering subjects. This paper discusses general implications of changes in mathematics education for the engineering subjects. Furthermore, some thoughts are provided on how the changed mathematical knowledge and skills amongst students might affect particular engineering subjects, such as chemical reaction engineering and bio-process engineering, which are important subjects within the Bio-engineering Program.
