摘要
Because nitric oxide (NO) release may be induced in bronchial epithelium by proinflammatory cytokines, it has been hypothesized that it may reflect the intensity of the inflammatory component of airway diseases. Indeed, increased NO levels in the expired air (e-NO) are present in asthma, and preliminary results suggest that this noninvasive test may be clinically useful in the management of patients with this disorder. Yet, questions have been raised concerning the technical aspects of e-NO measurement and concerning the real biological and clinical meaning of these bioactive species in exhaled air.
