摘要
We have applied Sm-149 nuclear forward scattering of synchrotron radiation to study the magnetism of the Sm sublattice in SmMn2Ge2. Our results show that, in the whole temperature range between 4 and 250 K spanning three different magnetic structures, the Sm3+ ions are magnetically ordered. At 4 K the 4f contributions to the magnetic hyperfine field and to the electric quadrupole interaction are very close to the free ion value of Sm3+, suggesting that the ground state of these ions in SmMn2Ge2 is an almost pure \5/2> state. For temperatures higher than 100 K only a fraction of the Sm ions show an ordered magnetic moment, the others being paramagnetic. The smooth variation with temperature of the hyperfine parameters suggests that the ordered Sm moments lie in the basal plane in all phases. The upper limit for the Sm ordered moment at T=250 K can be estimated as similar to0.1 mu(B).
