The synthesis, thermal and conduction properties of blends of poly(2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid) (PAMPSA) with imidazol (Im) are reported. PAMPSA-xIm blends were prepared for 0.5 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 2, where x was the number of moles of imidazol per polymer repeat unit. These blends call be cast into homogeneous films. The protonation of imidazol was demonstrated by FT-IR studies. Themogravimetric analysis (TG) illustrated that these blends are chemically stable up to about 180degreesC. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) shows that the softening temperature of the blends decreases from 87 degreesC for x = 0.5 to -25 degreesC for x = 2. The alternating current (ac) conductivities of the samples were measured via impedance spectroscopy. The direct current (dc) conductivity increases with x and temperature reaching 1.45 x 10(-3) S/cm for x = 2 at 100 degreesC. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
